OWLS

After Owls, runs every school day from 3:05 - 4:30 PM, serving students in Kindergarten through Grade 6.​ Led by talented coaches, charismatic actors, brilliant artists, dancers, and supportive teachers, these programmatic workshops foster friendships within a grade level, beyond the students’ homeroom classmates. Snack is provided daily, directly after school. ​

Funhouse is an all-in-one after-school experience that blends creativity, play, and connection. Each session begins with a group check-in and a fun circle activity, followed by free choice at hands-on stations like coloring, building, and crafts. With Coach Luis joining the group on a regular basis, students should also be prepared for active play and sport-inspired games that keep them moving and engaged. It’s the perfect way to unwind, explore, and have fun with friends after school!

Homework Club

Students can jump-start their homework in a comfortable, focused setting. Students may also enjoy independent reading time or other quiet academic practices. This program will provide students with the structure they need to complete their assignments alongside guidance from a teacher. Beyond the academic focus time, students will have opportunities for movement breaks outside of the Homework Club classroom to allow them to unwind from their school day alongside this group of peers.

This high-energy, fundamentals-focused class helps young athletes build skills, confidence, and teamwork while having a blast on the court. Mummy Madness with SplatLab

Mummy Madness is a super fun class that is all about ancient Egypt! Each class starts with a warm-up drawing activity, followed by a mini-lesson about Egyptian culture and artifacts. Then, students have dedicated time for art-making activities related to the artifact. Projects include pyramid design, mummy tattoos, tomb art, and creating protective amulets!

Fashion is an important form of self-expression and creativity for children, even early on. This class will focus on learning about textiles, styles, patterns, basic design skills, and hand sewing. We will work on crafts together throughout the course and begin to develop our sense of style and confidence. We will present what we have been working on at the end of the semester with a "fashion show" for our parents and caregivers.

Swimming with Penguin City Swim

After Owls is thrilled to continue its partnership with Penguin City Swim this winter! Students who participated in the fall are encouraged to continue building on their skills, and new swimmers in Grades 2-4 are welcome to join in this next round of swim classes. Winter swim lessons help students build confidence and be pool-ready for the spring and summer! Our students receive focused, personalized instruction in Penguin City Swim’s heated pool (86°F+). Swimmers practice freestyle, backstroke, and treading water with two experienced coaches and a certified lifeguard, starting with a skills assessment to ensure lessons match each child’s ability.


Travel and pick up details to note: Students will travel by bus with After Owls staff to Penguin City Swim’s Midtown East location (132 E 45th St) for a 45-minute swim class from 4:30 to 5:15 PM. Before leaving for the pool, students will have time to get a head start on their homework and change their clothes. Families will pick up directly at the pool at 5:30 PM (just one stop from Union Square to Grand Central on the 4/5 train).
 

Attire: Students are required to bring their swimsuits, flip flops/sandals/Crocs, goggles, and towels in a bag with their name on it. 

Paint, Pastels and Pencils with Nicole

Join us for a fine arts class that teaches students painting and drawing techniques. We will be inspired by the famous artists of our time, using various fun materials to create portraits, landscapes, and abstract compositions. We will play with color to create beautiful artwork!

Cooking with Milena

Milena returns to continue sharing the joy of cooking! Each week, she will provide a planned lesson featuring delicious recipes. Students will have the opportunity to influence the program by suggesting recipes for the following week. Students will learn essential cooking techniques and skills each week, including chopping, sautéing, and baking. Once their creations are complete, there will be time to enjoy the dishes in class or share them with parents and caregivers upon pick-up.

Hip Hop/KPop Dance with DramaZone

Taught by the pros at the DramaZone® this class is extremely popular! A cutting-edge Hip Hop /K-Pop style dance class with lots of great moves. We learn our favorite Hip Hop / K-Pop style dancing based on the original choreography we know and love. All dancing and music are appropriate. We begin with a proper studio warm-up, then bring on the choreography! Dancers develop movement and memorization while cultivating the budding choreographer. Dress: Comfortable clothes and sneakers.

Fans of Percy Jackson will love diving into the world of Greek myths in this dynamic week of theater! Ever wonder what the snakes on Medusa's head talk about? Ever seen an infomercial for Arachne's loom? Do you know what you would do if you came face-to-face with a Minotaur? Classic tales come alive as kids stage and perform short plays based on legendary stories. Part acting class, part improv class, kids create their own myth mash-up in addition to staging scripted one-acts. This is great early exposure to mythology and scene study techniques. Class culminates in a showcase for families.

Coding AI in Scratch with Launch

Trash Band with Emmy and Julia

Join Trash Band where first and second graders explore the joy of music by building their own percussion and string instruments using recycled materials like boxes, cans, rubber bands, and more! Students will learn how sound works by crafting drums, shakers, and simple string instruments, then come together to play, experiment, and jam as a group. Each session blends hands-on making with musical exploration, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and a love of rhythm and melody. The program is led by Associate Kindergarten teachers Emmy and Julia—Emmy is a percussionist with a passion for rhythm and movement, and Julia is a violist who loves helping children discover the magic of music.

Board Games and Strategy with Kim

Board Games and Strategy is all about having fun while developing key skills for children. Research has shown the multitude of benefits of playing board games - ranging from developing social skills (cooperation, turning taking) to increasing cognition (critical thinking, problem solving, goal setting) to winning and losing with grace. Students will have the space to learn new strategies and have fun in an environment that prioritizes growth over competition.

Roller Hockey with Matt

Get ready to glide, stick-handle, and score in this high-energy roller hockey class with Matt! Perfect for young players, the class combines the thrill of hockey with essential skating skills. Sports Broadcasting and Photography with CinemaKidz

Robot Rookies by Brooklyn Robot Foundry

Robot Rookies is the perfect start for kids to explore STEAM in a playful and supportive environment! Designed especially for our young builders, Brooklyn Robot Foundry’s Robot Rookies classes introduce them to the world of robotics in a fun and confidence-boosting way! Each week, students build their own robot to take home, working as independently as possible with the guidance of our skilled instructors. Along the way, they’ll flex their creativity in decorating and designing while learning foundational STEAM concepts. Students will get to build a new robot every semester. We have over 600 projects in our curriculum - that means students can take our classes for 8 years straight without repeating a project! Brooklyn Robot Foundry has been offering creative STEAM programs for children and adults since 2011. In this creative movie making workshop, kids will delve into the art of storytelling, drawing inspiration from their favorite Pokémon characters and class gameplay. Participants will explore how to craft their own Pokémon tales, from epic journeys to heartwarming friendships, as we start each class with a Pokemon card game that inspires the story we build. They'll brainstorm creative plots, develop original characters, and even build their very own Pokémon teams! The young filmmakers will bring their favorite Pokémon to life, as they immerse themselves in the captivating world of film production and special effects. Kids will design costumes and film a short narrative that blends hand drawn and animated settings and backgrounds with live-action performances and exhilarating special effect power-ups added in post-production! The course will culminate in an extraordinary mixed-media video project to share with family and friends!

Coding in ScratchJr. with Launch

Calling all future coders! Using the ScratchJr tablet app, budding computer scientists build a foundation for computer programming in this coding class for kids. It all starts with the design of customized characters, the changing of backgrounds, and the testing of motion blocks as students get a grasp of the basics. Next these mini-coders explore more complex skills such as sequencing motion blocks and creating interactions between characters with the end goal of putting their own spin on an interactive story or game!

Step into the spotlight with our captivating and interactive course, designed to transform you into a superstar musician and moviemaker! Participants will learn about songwriting, and music through hands-on activities. Students will get to experiment with music production software, create their original tracks, and explore the storytelling elements of songwriting. Next, students will select a song to plan, film, star in, and finally edit as their final masterpiece. Students will finish off the course experimenting with graphic design tools to make an original album cover, tour poster, and T-shirt!
