After Owls, formerly named Friends After Three, runs every school day from 3:05 - 4:30 PM, serving students in Kindergarten through Grade 6.​ Led by talented coaches, charismatic actors, brilliant artists, chess masters, and supportive teachers, these programmatic workshops foster friendships within a grade level, beyond the students’ homeroom classmates. Snack is provided daily, directly after school. ​

Pickleball with Coach Luis

Pickleball! The rules are easy for beginners to learn and skills quickly develop into a fast-paced, dynamic game for all athletics lovers. Pickleball is a sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played with a paddle and a lighter ball, and can lead to hours of fun. Coach Luis transforms his incredible tennis-coaching experience into this trending sport for young fans to jump in and get to playing!

Gadgets and Gizmos with iCAMP

Ideal for budding tinkerers and builders alike, Gadgets and Gizmos gives students the inside scoop on all the tools and machines that we rely on in our everyday lives. Students will explore and play with motors, speakers, and electromagnets, creating their own circuits to power them. Participants will learn core circuitry and electricity concepts, like current, resistors, conductivity, and more – building and testing their own gadgets along the way. Through discovery and curiosity, we will all develop a new appreciation for the devices we use in our daily lives.

Make a Musical: Under the Sea with Child's Play

Through improvisation and creative movement students flex their imaginative muscles as they learn the basics of vocal warm-ups, character development, singing and choreography from our expert teachers. Dive into drama, inspired by The Little Mermaid and the best aquatic-themed kid lit! Play a game of Sneaky Tag with the Sea Witch, find treasures from the deep, and enjoy showing off your skills at the underwater ball! Kids are inspired to make their own stories and sing classic songs for a “splashy” final showcase!

Intro to Mandarin with ABC Languages

This beginner Mandarin course will introduce your child to daily vocabulary such as greetings, introductions, colors, numbers and food through songs, movement and interactive games. The class will also focus on getting your child started on Pinyin and basic strokes of the Chinese characters in addition to learning about the fun aspects of Chinese culture and traditions. Ràng wǒmen yīqǐ xuéxí Let’s learn together!

Book Publishing with Amore Learning

In this exciting program, our class will publish its very own book! With partner Kid's Borough Media, we will use the first few classes of our time together to create a storyline, characters and illustrations for our class book. Each participant will play an active role in creating this shared project, and will take home their own copy! Once the book goes off to publishing, we will spend the final weeks of class creating our own individual book projects. Children will further have the opportunity to learn about the publishing world! 

Flag Football with Fastbreak Sports

Fastbreak Flag football teaches young and upcoming football players the necessary skills to advance to the next level. Players will be taught catching, throwing and flag pulling as well as offensive and defensive fundamentals. The program's curriculum is designed around player development and teaches proper technique in a fun, safe and high-energy environment.  

Homework Club

Students can jump start their homework in a comfortable, focused setting. Students may also enjoy independent reading time or other quiet academic practices. This program will provide students with the structure they need to complete their assignments alongside guidance from a teacher. Beyond the academic focus time, students will have opportunities for movement breaks in spaces outside of HW Club in order to unwind from their school day alongside this group of peers.

Art Studio: Crafty Structures with Nicole

In this creative hands-on arts and crafts class, students will become mini architects - designing projects using a variety of materials to create amazing original creations. We will design and create castles, playgrounds and skateboard parks, magical creature puppets and mini islands, buildings and shops. Using recycled materials, clay, cardboard, paper, wooden craft sticks and plaster. We’ll explore different studio techniques to create our own worlds, full of imagination.

BBall Club with Melissa

Basketball Club is a community space to encourage fans of the sport and bball athletes to come together for activity, fun, and camaraderie. We will have time to learn more and discuss the amazing NY teams: Liberty, Nets, Knicks. We will center our practice on lessons of the game - from skill building to the values of sportsmanship and teamwork. Of course, we will get moving - dribbling, shooting, passing, and playing group games! Whether you are the next LeBron James or Sue Bird, we hope to see you in BBall Club!

Coding Explorations with Judith

Art + Design + Code = Lots of maker fun! Students will combine hand drawing, ProCreate digital art, and intermediate programming skills to create interactive games that deepen their coding and graphic design skills.Possibilities also include designing your own stickers and jewelry in Turtle Art, creating a Scratch PSA, designing Finch robot obstacle course, and stitching a Snap coded design on our embroidery machine. The platforms we will use will be: Scratch, Snap, Turtle Art, Tinkercad and Procreate.

Friends Rock Band with Luis M.

So you wanna be a rockstar? This is your chance to rock n’ roll and put on a show! In this program, children will play electric guitars, bass guitars and drums like a real-life rock band. They will develop and deepen their instrumental knowledge and skills. At the end of the program, the rock stars will put on a concert where they will perform for their adoring fans. 

Fun with Science with iCAMP

Put on your lab coats and don your safety glasses, this Little Einsteins’ Fun with Science course is a broad introduction to core scientific concepts for young learners. Throughout the course, students will learn more about the chemical reactions, molecules, atoms, and physics that define the world around them. Through experimentation and discovery, they will learn to relate these sometimes challenging concepts to their own real-life experiences. Experiments like self-inflating baking soda and vinegar balloons and mini volcanos encased in lemons will teach them that incredible scientific discoveries wait around every corner, if they just know where to look.

Multi Sport Games with Coach Luis

This program will bring students together for a rotation of athletic and team building activities. Innovative athletics will be at the basis of this creative sports program. Wonder Move with Sophia

Imaginative movement and gently guided creative dance exercises will be at the heart of this program. Sophia will incorporate yoga practices, dance instruction and musical elements into these weekly gatherings. Rollerblading is one of the safest sports around and a proven thorough workout. Children have the opportunity to join the blading craze by learning the moves from an inline pro! Basic skating instruction will include striding, turning, stopping, crossovers and much more. Group games ensue with exhilarating cheers echoing through the gym. Individual skates, pads and helmets required.

Micro Adventures with Jenny

Micro adventures are hands-on learning activities, where students research, create, and then lead their friends on mini adventures (often outside). The group will collaborate on designing and planning that adventure that builds on the student's talents and passions. Then, off to adventuring we go, whether it be an exploration into the science of ice cream making, treehouse building, life-size candy land, beaver explorations, sports history, or a nature walk. Each participant will have the opportunity to be the adventure leader, showcasing their ideas to their peers.

The Friends Dispatch with Alex

Calling all photojournalists, artists (cartoonists!), interviewers, poets, investigators, and writers: The Friends Dispatch, an After Owls mini magazine, needs you! This course will base activities around the development of creating your own mini publication: developing headline design, poetry workshop, writing exercises, and other creative work. Hitting newsstands at a bodega near you.

Animation Studio with Cinema Kidz

Children utilize a variety of materials to build props, characters, and fantastical mini movie sets to feature in original stop-motion animation films. Experiment with combining live action with animation, as well as effects like drawing on each frame, and utilizing green screens and stock footage. Children learn to create their own sounds and special effects to add to their shorts as they work in post-production finishing their animated shorts. Kids will explore various stop-motion and digital animation techniques, and create a variety of both 2D as well as 3D projects.

Minecraft Coding: Superheros with Code Advantage

The Minecraft world needs your help! In this class, students will learn coding fundamentals and use them to create powerful superheroes with special abilities. Students will learn to move, explore and build/craft within Minecraft. Each class creates a new opportunity for creative problem-solving from our coders to save the Minecraft world. From traveling to a ruined city and exploring a frozen bunker to saving the White House! Students will have an amazing time putting their coding skills to the test through various projects. (Prior coding or Minecraft experience is not required.

Soccer with Soccer Stars

With Soccer Stars, we will use the soccer ball as the vehicle to help children not only improve their soccer skills, but develop self-confidence and physical literacy, improve gross motor skills, and hone socialization skills. Dynamic coaches work with small groups of children to develop these skills and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Full group play and games will ensure weekly - let’s go!

This ceramics and pottery program will truly be hands-on! The calming and nourishing experience of working with clay will show up in the cozy atmosphere of the studio and the beautiful creations made. What a relaxing and engaging way to end the school day. Students will have experience working with clay, glaze, carving and styling tools, firing and kiln use. We look forward to seeing what amazing ceramics you make (and of course, take home)!

Friends Rock: Guitar Club with Luis M.

Friends Rock leader, Luis Miranda, guides this group for lessons on the foundational instrument of the guitar and all of its forms! Participants can be absolute beginners, to guitar-playing aficionados, either way we will come together for Guitar Club - based on the love of the instrument and community music-making. Participants will learn fundamentals: scales, chords, tuning, rhythm, musical development as well as how to utilize a guitar/bass amplifier. Luis bases this program on learning-through-playing, so all students will be jamming on rock band guitars/basses throughout this program. They will develop and deepen their guitar instrumental knowledge and skills. At the end of the program, the rock stars will put on a culmination performance for their adoring fans!

Capoeira Friends with Barry

Kick, spin, cartwheel and make music with Barry as we play Capoeira! Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art/dance form that combines fun movement with music. Move over Coco, Gianni, Stella and Ralph! There are some new fashion designers in town who can't wait to share their styles. Bring your creativity and self-expression to this fun course in which students will create their very own fashion line. We'll each name our own brand and create a logo, explore styles from different designers, and learn from actual fashion experts themselves as we design our own look books. We will also come up with ad campaigns and collaborations! Join us for a celebration of fashion and friendship in this unique program.

Friends, it is a World Cup year! There were thrilling match ups during the Men's World Cup in the fall and lots to get excited about with the Women's Cup around the corner this summer! After Owls, let's see your skills and sportsmanship soar! Coach Deanna, Friends Girls' Varsity soccer coach, leads junior players along this well-loved game. This program will focus on individual skill, fitness, teamwork, and will provide an opportunity for children to be challenged through fun games and team interaction.

Scene Study with Child's Play

Join us as we explore the wild and wondrous worlds of Roald Dahl! We rehearse scenes from James and the Giant Peach, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, The Witches, and Matilda and delve into acting technique, comedic timing and character development. Song and spoken-word poetry will augment our rehearsal process. Improvisation and theater games help stoke creativity, create an ensemble and develop the spirit of play as students rehearse. A great session for kids to increase confidence, craft, and their ability to work as part of an ensemble. Class culminates in a final sharing.

Music Video Making with Cinema Kidz

Kids become Art Directors, Cinematographers, Movie-stars, and Dancers as they plan, storyboard, film, and finally edit their very own Music Video. Children will utilize professional filmmaking equipment, and dive into art direction as they create costumes and props for the video. Students will work with a Choreographer to plan awesome visuals and make up their very own moves. Participants will learn how to create unique moods as they experiment with using lights, gels, various camera lenses, and more. After working on their production, participants will get down to editing, and learning awesome tricks of the trade to make an epic video. Children also have the opportunity to create an original song and/or lyrics.

Clay Creations with Clay World

Explore the art of clay animation, clay modeling techniques, and character design in this studio workshop. This artistic class helps students improve their creativity, fine motor skills and artist capabilities. Monsters, fairies, animals, backdrops and all sorts of creatures will be hand-built. All creations built during class can be taken home. Many decorative, colorful, functional and creative projects to come!

Chess with Samuel

Open to players of all levels. Beginners will be introduced to the fundamentals of the game, including basic strategy and tactics. More advanced students will study and learn correct opening strategies, middle game planning and basic endgame theory. Checkmate!
